Unlike most networking devices you’ll find in the market, the Linksys RE6300 functions in not one or two but three modes. You can use it as a wireless router, an access point, and a range extender. Setting up Linksys RE6300 extender device in extender mode means you are using it to connect with another router at your place. You can now get increased network coverage and connect to the internet on the go. However, to realise this, you’ll need access to information to help you do the same easily. Requirements for the Linksys RE6300 setup
Before you begin with the setup process, here are some points you should consider:
- Ensure you have an active internet connection.
- The range extender is within range of the main router signals.
- You have the main router network details including the SSID and password. You can login to your router’s web setup wizard and locate the details as needed.
- Keep the default admin details like the username and password handy.
Linksys RE6300 setup as an Extender
You can begin with the setup process by connecting your devices to each other and powering them on. The further steps would involve accessing the login page and configuring device and network settings. Here are some steps you can follow to proceed:
- Connect your Linksys RE6300 range extender to the power outlet. Try to plug it in the same room as your main router so it is easier to access the network.
- Power on the devices and allow them to become stable. Once they are, proceed with connecting your computer or wireless device to the range extender network.
- Open the wireless network settings on your computer or smartphone, and look for the RE6300 network SSID in the available networks section. Once visible, you can click on the name and select the Connect button.
- You can also choose to connect your range extender to the computer using a wired connection. This way you will find it easier to set up your device.
- Once connected, you will receive a confirmation message on the screen.
Accessing the Linksys RE6300 login page
- Launch a web browser and in the address bar, type the default web address http://extender.linksys.com. Press Enter.
- If using the web address doesn’t generate any results, use the IP address 192.168.1.1 instead. Press Enter now.
- The Linksys RE6300 setup wizard will appear on the screen.
- From the main screen, click on the Start Setup button.
- On the next screen, the “As a range extender” option will be selected by default. Click on the “Next” button.
Configuring the Linksys RE6300 network settings
- From the next screen, select the main router network from the list of the networks shown. If you have a dual-band router, you’ll see both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on the screen.
- If the router’s network name isn’t visible, check if the wireless discovery is enabled on your router. Alternatively, you can also enter the network name and password manually. Simply, click on the Manually Enter Network Name and Password button.
- Once you have selected the network name, simply type in the password in the field and then click on the Next button.
- Once connected, the setup wizard will prompt you to configure the extended WiFi network. Specify a network name for both the network bands and then click on the Next button.
- On the next screen, the spotfinder application will signal if the extender is at the right location. Move the same accordingly. Once you see the icon in the Just right range, click on the Next button.
- In the next step, secure your range extender using an admin password. This will secure your range extender device and network settings from unauthorised access. Click Save once you have entered the required details.
- On the next screen, you can register your range extender. Type in your email address and then click on the Next button.
- The final setup screen will display a summary of the extender settings. Review the same and close the setup wizard once final.
